Summary

The ICPSR version of the study includes samples of community leaders from 3 nations: 905 American respondents, 955 Indian respondents, and 1,179 Yugoslavian respondents. The data were collected in 1966 from 30 local communities in each nation. The interviews yielded an individual file for each respondent. In addition, a community file was constructed to describe each community. For the United States and India, the individual file contains 13 cards of data per respondent and approximately 468 variables. For Yugoslavia the individual file contains 4 cards of data per respondent and approximately 150 variables. For all three nations, the community file consists of 17 cards of data per community and approximately 200 variables. The study attempted a comparative examination of the impact of leaders' values on social change and development at the community level. Questions were asked about social and occupational back ground, the problems facing local communties, possible sol u tions, community goals, and several measures of leaders' social and political values and aspirations. The smaller individual file for Yugoslavia does not include the background variables, nor a series of open-ended questions which probed more deeply into the above topics. The community file describes the social and economic aspects of the community using aggregate data. It also includes summary statistics computed for the attitudes and values of community leaders.
