Annual Housing Survey, 1975 [United States]: SMSA Files

United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census

Summary
The Annual Housing Surveys (called American Housing Surveys since 1984) comprise two major data collections: a national survey of housing units throughout the country, and surveys of housing units in selected metropolitan areas. The national data are released by the Census Bureau in two forms: the National Core file and the National Core and Supplement. In addition, supplemental data on transportation are available in Travel-to-Work files for some survey years. These four types of files are described below. For all Annual Housing Surveys, data are collected on whether the housing units have kitchens, heating units, and electrical systems and, if so, how well these work. Information on the costs incurred for mortgage payments, real estate taxes, property insurance, utilities, and garbage collection allow comparisons of housing costs from one year to another or between geographic areas. Data collected on income can be used in conjunction with annual housing expenditures to estimate the average percentage of families' and primary individual's incomes which is spent on housing. Households which have moved in the 12 months prior to enumeration are asked to provide comparative information on the current and previous residences of household heads. Information is collected on whether employment, family, or other factors such as changes in neighborhood or financial conditions influenced the decision to move. Demographic information, including age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder is collected for each household member. Additional information, including years of school completed, Spanish origin, length of residence, and tenure is provided for the householder. An important feature of these surveys is that generally the same housing units remain in the sample year after year, and it is the housing unit rather than its occupants which are followed. Longitudinal analysis can be performed on sampled units from 1974-1983, and on the new sample of housing units selected from the 1980 Census beginning in 1984. Data for The National Core and the National Core and Supplement files were collected annually through 1981 and have been collected every two years since that time. Each household completes a set of core questions about housing expenditures, taxes, insurance, etc., and an additional set of supplement questions which vary from year to year. The National Core files are released from the Census Bureau first, and only contain the core questions. The National Core and Supplement (here referred to as simply the ''National'' files) contains both core and supplement questions. The metropolitan area data are collected on a continuous basis and are reported annually. Prior to 1984 the metropolitan area data were collected on a sample of approximately 20 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) per year. Beginning in 1984, data were collected on a rotating sample of 44 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Eleven MSAs are surveyed each year, with any given MSA surveyed once every four years. The Travel-to-Work supplement was designed to provide current information for the selected metropolitan areas concerning such subjects as place of work, means of transportation to work, carpooling and carpool occupancy, travel time to work, distance to work, time of departure for work, and other transportation-related subjects. This collection contains transportation data from the supplement and selected demographic and household characteristics which are also available from the AHS Public Use Files. Questions on travel to work were asked of all household members 14 years of age and over who had a job during the week prior to the interview.
